Meet Kim
Kimberley Grattan, RPT
Having played the piano since she was 8 years old, Kimberley has always been aware of the positive effect music has on the world.
This passion, along with a knack for mechanics, led her to the field of Piano Technology.
After a year of basic training, Kim earned a position at PianoWorks, one of the premier piano restoration and rebuilding companies in the US- in January of 2011. She worked there for four years while being mentored by some of the most reputable technicians in the field.
At Pianoworks Kim learned every aspect of piano rebuilding and repair. Her primary focus was action rebuilding and regulation, tuning, and eventually concert tuning and preparation. Today, she furthers her understanding and learns new skills through one-on-one classes with master technicians, and through training offered by piano manufacturers and the Piano Technicians Guild.
Kimberley was an official technician for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival from 2012 through 2019, where she had the opportunity to tune for some of the world’s top piano players including Herbie Hancock, Henry Butler, Jon Batiste, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Dr. John, Chucho Valdes, Harry Connick Jr, and many others.
In 2018, after an unexpected call from a colleague who was relocating -Joel Hassenritter, Kim found herself learning new business skills as the owner of Sound Pianos. The Alliance Theater, Agnes Scott College, Wesleyan School, The Murray Arts Center, John’s Creek Baptist Church, Dunwoody United Methodist Church, and the Woodruff Arts Center are now among Kim’s clients.
Kim is proud to be mentoring the next generation of piano technicians as Sound Pianos welcomes Emily Rand, our new field service technician.
Sound Pianos proudly serves and supports the music communities in and around Atlanta, and we are excited to do so for many years to come.

MEET Emily
Emily Rand, Field Service Technician
Emily started piano lessons at six years old but was never sure how her love for the instrument would fit into her life. After earning a bachelor’s in microbiology, she realized that piano technology presented the right blend of art, science, and most importantly, pianos!
She enrolled in The Butler School of Piano Technology and was mentored by Kim Grattan and Harry Cardwell before landing a position with PianoWorks in 2022.
In 2026 Emily moved to Sound Pianos full-time, where she continues her apprenticeship with Kim. She is excited to continue providing excellent service while honing her skills!
