Piano Tuning

Most pianos need to be tuned at least twice a year. Use and seasonal changes affect the wood and thus affect the stability of the tuning. We will recommend a service schedule for your instrument that will keep your piano at the proper pitch.

Why is regularly tuning your piano important?

This is a common question among piano owners, and there are a number of reasons why keeping your piano at the proper pitch is important:

  1. The soundboard, string scale, and bridges are designed for optimal tone when the strings are at the correct tension. Flat pianos sound tubby and dull, too-sharp pianos sound brittle, and too much tension on the strings can cause warping in the wire.

  2. Other instruments, such as brass or woodwind, are unable to "tune down" to an out-of-tune piano which makes playing in a group that includes these instruments very difficult and sometimes irritating for everyone!

  3. Lastly, young people just learning to appreciate and play music should learn to associate the correct pitch with each note. It can be a challenge for them to begin learning and practicing on an out-of-tune piano. Not only it is unpleasant but it can be a severe handicap to new students.

SERVICES

Piano Cleaning

Keeping your piano clean isn’t just for looks. Dust holds moisture, which can eventually lead to rust and even mold! A thorough cleaning is also a perfect opportunity to have a close look at every part of the instrument, making it easier to discover any issues.

SERVICES

Regulation

The beauty of the piano is in its dynamic range. A well-regulated instrument responds to the player and is capable of expressing even the subtlest nuances.

The piano action is comprised of over 9,000 moving components. Over time, wear and other factors can cause these parts to go out of alignment and the piano's responsiveness to be diminished. Regulation consists of a series of adjustments to the action which restore responsiveness, efficiency, and control. The goal is to re-establish the connection between player and instrument to allow the ultimate musical expression.

Voicing

Every piano has its own voice and many factors contribute to the tone quality of each instrument. Making sure the strings are level and seated properly, shaping the hammers, mating each hammer to it’s strings, and working the felt of the hammers are some of the voicing procedures. The goal is to bring out the unique timbre of the instrument, create a more mellow or more bold sound depending on the pianist’s preference, and help the piano really sing!

SERVICES

What Does My Piano Need?

The amount of time that has passed since your piano’s last tuning plays a part in what your piano needs today. If it has been a while, we can help outline what services it will likely need.

Keep in mind that your instrument is unique! We have serviced thousands of pianos and can provide estimates based on our experience, however, your piano has lived its own life that will determine exactly what it needs. All our appointments begin with an evaluation to help us determine what services are best for you, your musician, and your instrument.

Residential Pianos serviced less than 6 months ago

Biannual service is recommended for most instruments in our area. This includes tuning, minor adjustments, and/or touch-up cleaning. Estimated cost of service: $175

Residential Pianos serviced between 1 and 3 years ago

After a year or two, your piano may need a small pitch correction, a mechanical adjustment or two, and a good cleaning to bring it back up to snuff. Your service call will include these and a thorough tuning. Estimated cost of service: $175-250

Residential Pianos serviced more than 3 years ago

If it has been over three years since your last service, your piano is probably pretty far off pitch and out-of-tune at this point. There may be a couple of sticking keys or a squeaky pedal. Your service call will include a quick evaluation, possible minor repairs and adjustments, pitch correction, and tuning. Estimated cost of service: $250-$350
